25 years, 25 books: What is Design?

Charles Eames, ¿Qué es el diseño?

Charles Eames, besides being one of the most recognised and influential designers of the twentieth century, was also a poetry lecturer at Harvard for some time. The legendary interview he gave in 1972 on the occasion of the Qu’est ce que le design? exhibition still holds his fascinating intensity and powerful poetic expression more than forty years later. During that conversation, Eames explained his views on many aspects on the nature of Design and Design Thinking that are still discussed today.

What is your definition of ‘Design,’ Monsieur Eames?
One could describe Design as a plan for arranging elements to accomplish a particular purpose.

Is Design an expression of art?
I would rather say it’s an expression of purpose. It may, if it is good enough, later be judged as art.

Is Design a craft for industrial purposes?
No, but Design may be a solution to some industrial problems.

What are the boundaries of Design?
What are the boundaries of problems?

The full interview at Eames Office

Eames expressed a model in which design was seen as an instrument for a better future. An inspirational reading, really essential to understanding the origin of the objects that surround us.

25 years, 25 books: Lezioni Americane

Itali Calvino, Lezioni Americane

In 1985, Harvard University invited Italo Calvino to impart the "Charles Eliot Norton Poetry Lectures", a prestigious series of lectures in which had already participated prominent figures as TS Eliot, Igor Stravinsky or Jorge Luis Borges. Calvino prepared for the event six lessons on the values of literature which he felt were important for the coming millennium:

Lightness
Quickness
Exactitude
Visibility
Multiplicity
Consistency

Unfortunately, death overtook him a week before traveling to Harvard. The conference was never pronounced, but the texts prepared for the first five lessons were collected in a book published posthumously in 1988. Architects, designers and art critics welcomed the book not only as one of the most lucid and inspiring visions of the coming changes, but also as a guide to the attitudes and values that should drive the creativity and the material culture in the new millennium.

Calvino proposed a severe mental discipline, tempered by irony and by awareness of partiality and provisionality of any method of research and knowledge. The implicit poetics in his lessons is not prescriptive, but driven by dialogue and creativity. «All life -said Calvino, and his words resonate today as a true manifesto of design- is an encyclopedia, a library, an inventory of objects, a sampling of styles, where everything can be continuously remixed and rearranged in every way».

More than thirty years after them were written, the six memos for the next millennium are an excellent starting point for discussions about the beginning of this fascinating, complex and turbulent millennium.

25 years, 25 books: Da cosa nasce cosa

Bruno Munari, Da cosa nasce cosa

Guided by the rigid and dogmatic Cartesian method, versatile designer Bruno Murani systematically analysed in 1981 designers’ process from the moment they address a functional problem until they devise a material solution. «Designing is easy when you know how to do it. Everything is easy when you know what to do to get to the solution of a problem», he said. Considering that any cookbook is a design methodology book, and taking a green rice recipe as an example, Munari placed problems at the origin of a linear design process. «The projective method –Munari explained– simply consists of a number of required operations, arranged in a logical order dictated by experience. His aim is to achieve maximum results with minimum effort». His book soon became a guide for a whole generation of designers and one of the key elements for the development and dissemination of projective culture in the late twentieth century.

Nevertheless the sequential processed proposed by Munari has finally given way to an iterative and cyclical journey that encourages learning and allows to correct errors in focus, Munari's book remains an essential reference on the origins of the design methodology.

ABB Niessen: 100 years of history

ABB Niessen | Sistema de Centralización

ABB Niessen factory celebrates its 100 years of activity since the young Wilhelm Niessen started the business in 1914 in Rentería (Gipuzkoa). Back then manufactured household electromechanical mechanisms as plugs, switches, sockets and other similar items. After the golden age of the factory, in the 50s, Niessen ceased to be a family business in the late 70s and joined the multinational ABB in 1996.

Through the innovation of their products can be felt the evolution Niessen lived during this time. As stated in the press release of the company, the design has been the differentiator and the value added of the Niessen product. Always an own and local design, created by an ambitious, demanding and nonconformist team. A group that has always looked for differentiation and innovation, where prestigious industrial designers have taken part to incorporate the most current design trends and the most advanced technical solutions.

A clear example is the participation of ADN DESIGN, who collaborated on the design of Communication and Access Control Systems and then on Niessen Centralization Systems, a complete range of Workstations and Centralizations, which resolve the surface installations as well as the flush mounted switches.

Barcelona Design Thinking Week 2013

Barcelona Design Thinking Week 2013

For the last five years we have been facing many changes and challenges in every field all over Europe. Especially in the Mediterranean, we constantly see strategies, ideas, and mechanisms for successfully avoid these transformations and pose future scenarios in every area. Creativity and services optimization are the order of the day, and social and economic changes motivate new perspectives within the companies and organizations.

Bearing this context in mind, the interesting and motivating second edition of Barcelona Design Thinking Week will take place from the 1st to 5th of July 2013. Organized by Elisava School of Design, the theme of this year’s event is ‘Social Change, Innovation and Enterpreneurship’. Carlos Alonso Pascual was invited by Jorge Rodriguez, director of the Master’s Degree in Research for Design and Innovation given by Elisava, to give a talk on July 1 on the exploration of opportunities:

In this ambiguous and changing world, profoundly influenced by the crisis and uncertainty, solving problems no longer is of any help for us. Entrepreneurs, companies, and organizations must stop focusing their attention only in solving definite problems and start adventuring a much more complex, interconnected, and rich territory that integrates research, knowledge, and creative exploration into a new synthesis: Imaginaction.
How should we manage the complex problems that we have to face in order to avoid that they distort our perception of reality? In which way can we use crisis and chaos as a creative launch pad towards a more caring, responsible, and sustainable future? Which attitudes and which conceptual tools do we need to develop for exploring and recognising the opportunities hidden in the complex current situation? How can we turn this opportunities into radical innovative proposals? These issues will strongly influence in the evolution of design and creativity during the next years.

Organized by the Creativity Zentrum Association, Creativity Meeting Point is the International Forum for Creative Industries which every March immerses Bilbao in creativity and good ideas. For the fifth consecutive year, the Maritime Museum of the city has hosted this international event that has already become a landmark event on Creativity, Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Creativity Meeting Point 2013

Moderated by Arantza Atutxa, the session dedicated to the revitalization of the creative industries also benefited from the presence of Arantta Santamaria, Gorbeialde Rural Development Association, and Luis Gallo, Bidasoa Activa. In a brief statement, Carlos Alonso Pascual summarized the main lines of the Bilbao World Design Capital candidacy project:

Having undertaken industrial and urban transformations, Bilbao is now seeking to become the town of knowledge and to be a global benchmark for creativity and design. The turning point, and one of the levers of this new challenge was the World Design Capital candidacy in 2014.

As recalled Edward Glaeser, professor of economics at Harvard University, «The success of a city lies in the level of education and the initiative of its citizens, not in their infrastructures.» The nomination has been a powerful engine to achieve this vision and transform the design, creativity and innovation in the heart of our city, our organizations and our lives.

ESAG Penninghen Diplôme

ESAG Penninghen

ESAG Penninghen has held the Diplôme 2010 exhibition, June 25th to 27th, opening its stands for the presentation of the works done by the graduated students. ESAG Penninghen, École Supérieure de Design, d'Art Graphique et d'Architecture Intérieure is a private school of higher education created in 1953, and member of France Design Education, Cumulus and CFAI. Located on the old premises of the famous Académie Julian, in the heart of Saint-Germain des Prés, and a few steps from the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay, the students learn and work in a privileged framework, following the steps once taken by Gauguin, Léger, Matisse, Van de Velde, or Rauchenberg.

On Tuesday, June 22nd, an international jury of professionals of architecture, landscaping, and design –where Brigitte Sauvage participated as industrial designer, interior architect, and ADN DESIGN partner- was in charge of evaluating the thesis and works done by the students of the last year of Interior Architecture and Design, and to grant the Master diplomas 2010 (Baccalauréat +5). The works submitted by this class showed great quality due to the broad outlook of the research done and the rigor of the developed process, as well as by the right choice of the created concepts and their adaptation to the project objectives. It is also worth mentioning the creativity shown by these young professionals in the conception and performance of their exhibition stands and the excellent presentation of the information panels and models on display.
