In the complex scene of challenges that the development of cities represent, design is proving it can provide conceptual and methodological tools of extraordinary validity.
This conference organized by Bilbao Bizkaia Design & Creativity Council (BiDC) on the occasion of the World Design Day aims to bring professionals, businesses, organizations and institutions involved in this challenge the experience of four cities that have successfully approached it, Montréal, Saint-Étienne, Eindhoven and London.

09:15 Montréal: Local Trade and Design

The increasing shift of retail and leisure offer to large surfaces is a serious problem that cities must address urgently from the economic and tourist areas. Design and innovation in the commercial premises, in the service and in the offer itself, can contribute to their recovery.
Presenter: Juan Carlos Ercoreca, President of Bilbao Dendak
Speaker: Marie-Josée Lacroix, Director Bureau du Design Montréal.
She will introduce the Commerce Design Montréal initiative for urban trade recovery through design and innovation.

10:00 Saint-Étienne: Spaces for Design in the City

When initiatives related to the design and creative industries bring together the participation of citizens, they provide an unstoppable transforming energy to the cities.
Presenter: Carlos Alonso, Founder and Co-Director of ADN design
Speakers: Ludovic Noël, Director General of the Cité du design Saint-Étienne, and Josyane Franc, Director of International Relations at the Cité du design Saint-Étienne.
They will present the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne, focusing on the involvement of the city and institutions.

11:15 Eindhoven: Management of open work in the creative industries

Like society, companies increasingly present more open and collaborative organizational forms. The work itself is organized upon renewed and innovative schemes, especially in the field of creative industries.
Presenter: Manu Gómez-Álvarez, Director of Hacería-ZAWP
Speaker: Maarten Hendriks, Founder of Little Mountain,
He will present the Little Mountain Creative initiative, which explores new ways of organizing work in the creative industries and startups.

12:00 London: Strategies for Creative Cities

Cities are nowadays the subject of reinvention, as if it were a commodity to continue generating economic growth, but also welfare, receptiveness and sustainability.
Presenter: Jesus Cañada, President of the Biscayan delegation of the Colegio de Arquitectos Vasco-Navarro.
Speaker: Patricia Brown, Vice President Design Advisory Group of the Mayor of London
She will present different processing strategies, positioning and promotion of cities through design and creative industries.

12:45 Questions and Discussion

The four panelists will answer questions from the public, collected throughout the day.
