Bosch Quickfilling

The Research, Innovation and Development, Department of Science, Technology and University of Aragon Government, through the ITA, with INAEM support, launched the fifth edition of the FORINNOVA PROGRAM dedicated to the training of innovation managers, by granting financial assistance to businesses for job placement of unemployed graduates.

The automatic shut-off system "secure" ensures automatic disconnection in case of neglect (30 seconds in horizontal or overturned position and 8 minutes in vertical position), which provides greater security to its users.

Establish what is beautiful and what is not is maybe one of the most interesting intellectual challenges. For many it may be an illusion. When is it reasonable to apply the category of beauty, and to what objects? Are there codes that go beyond the cultural and time standards? The debate opens up as a wide range offering many possibilities.

Plato’s beauty concepts have most influenced Western thought. Based on Pythagoras’ notion of beauty as harmony and proportion, he reformulated the original concept of splendor, according to which beauty lies in a kind of unintelligible light, from which the sensitive world is a mere approximation.

Based on the concept of beauty of the famous German philosopher, ADN DESIGN has created a new bollard for the Samen Group that implies a very significant advance in comparison to what the market offered until now. Indeed, Hegel bollard is in accordance with a clear idea of adaptability in an innovating manner.

It is a bollard designed as a hybrid part that may be used not only as a hallmark, but also as sidewalk rangers or bicycle racks. With a chain or rope, the part may also be used as a closure or limit of spaces in very diverse environments.

Amazing and half-breed, it represents the manifestation of its adaptability.

Design and use value in the conception of innovating products

Last June Brigitte Sauvage offered the course “Design and use value in the conception of innovating products” at the Instituto Tecnológico de Aragón ITA [Aragon Technological Institute], to design, marketing, and engineering professionals that are independent or members of SME from Aragón.

This course shows the potentiality of different methods and levels of research as regards creativity applied to use. It is a practical work philosophy, whose tools of analysis may be used, readapted, or obviated according to the problem posed, the analysis goals, and the available resources. It aims for the professionals to develop their own concepts of the processes and methods to be applied according to the characteristics of their project.

The course is within a global vision of innovation focused on the users and led by design. In this context, the strategic integration of design in the companies is a key element of competitiveness to promote new forms of innovation based on people.

Next October 25th, Brigitte will start a new edition of this course in the Aragon Technology Institute ITA, within the Training Plan for Employment in Aragon 2010.

Both training actions have been performed under the technical management of the Centro Aragonés de Diseño Industrial CADI [Industrial Design Center of Aragon] of the Department of Industry, Commerce, and Tourism of the Government of Aragon.

Ravel

The exceptional and creative restaurant Atea of Bilbao has been the innovating framework where the Samen Group has introduced the new flower planter Ravel. Placed on the façade of Daniel García’s amazing restaurant, the flower planter Ravel is an entrance hallmark to a different space, where tables and experiences are shared with known and unknown people. Aiming at a sensible and reasonable cuisine in constant evolution, the Atea restaurant has achieved a very prominent position in the gastronomic offer of Bilbao.

The flower planter designed by ADN DESIGN is named after Joseph Maurice Ravel, French composer who excelled by revealing «the most subtle games of intelligence and the most hidden outpourings of the heart» (Le Robert).

Indeed, as Carlos Alonso Pascual said, «the flower planter is inspired in the rhythm and tempo of the famous Bolero, a true masterpiece that symbolizes Ravel’s concern for redesign and reinvention of dance movements. The contrast between the stubborn foreshortening of the planter’s surfaces and the careful proportions of its horizontal bands creates the tension necessary to turn this simple and categorical flower planter into a clever tribute to one of the most performed compositions worldwide.»

Ravel had in mind the staging of the Bolero ballet in an outdoor space, with a factory in the background, reflecting the mechanical nature of the piece. The location of the Ravel flower planter in the angle of the old Depósito Franco [Customs Warehouse] on the Uribitarte pier, in the heart itself of the renowned transformation the Villa is experiencing, is a good choice and it represents the ideal framework of this sophisticated piece.

ESAG Penninghen Diplôme

ESAG Penninghen has held the Diplôme 2010 exhibition, June 25th to 27th, opening its stands for the presentation of the works done by the graduated students. ESAG Penninghen, École Supérieure de Design, d'Art Graphique et d'Architecture Intérieure is a private school of higher education created in 1953, and member of France Design Education, Cumulus and CFAI. Located on the old premises of the famous Académie Julian, in the heart of Saint-Germain des Prés, and a few steps from the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay, the students learn and work in a privileged framework, following the steps once taken by Gauguin, Léger, Matisse, Van de Velde, or Rauchenberg.

On Tuesday, June 22nd, an international jury of professionals of architecture, landscaping, and design –where Brigitte Sauvage participated as industrial designer, interior architect, and ADN DESIGN partner- was in charge of evaluating the thesis and works done by the students of the last year of Interior Architecture and Design, and to grant the Master diplomas 2010 (Baccalauréat +5). The works submitted by this class showed great quality due to the broad outlook of the research done and the rigor of the developed process, as well as by the right choice of the created concepts and their adaptation to the project objectives. It is also worth mentioning the creativity shown by these young professionals in the conception and performance of their exhibition stands and the excellent presentation of the information panels and models on display.

Design opens its doors

Loyal to our commitment to the training of young designers and our involvement in the development of the social role of design, ADN DESIGN has participated in the initiative “Design opens its doors” on June 30th. Based on a concept and script by Brigitte Sauvage, the initiative was within the activities scheduled to celebrate the World Industrial Design Day 2010, a celebration promoted by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design ICSID.

The topic of this year’s edition was “Industrial Design: Humane solutions for a resilient world”, and it was selected to facilitate the cooperation among designers from all around the world in order to suggest tangible solutions to the serious global problems.

The initiative “Design opens its doors”, produced by Creativity Zentrum, congregated several people to our facilities, where they could learn first-hand the extent and the international projection of design in the Basque Country. Thank you to all of them for their visit.

Frigidaire FCL-212

Frigidaire, one of the leading brands in the refrigerator market, is renowned worldwide for its innovating style of leadership and its enviable reputation for top quality household appliances at reasonable prices.

Frigidaire was founded as the Guardian Refrigerator Company in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and it developed its first autonomous refrigerator in 1916. In 1918, William C. Durant, founder of General Motors, invested personally in the company, and in 1919 it adopted the Frigidaire name. From 1919 to 1979, the company belonged to General Motors. During this period, it was the first Delco-Light branch, and later it was an independent division with headquarters in Dayton, Ohio. Frigidaire was sold to White Consolidated Industries in 1979, which in turn was acquired by Electrolux, its current owner, in 1986.

In the whole set of Electrolux brands, Frigidaire is the best example of a name that dominates a whole category of products. Even though the brand is purely American in origin, the products under this name have been in the world market since the 1930's. During that time, they became a symbol of a very special level of prestige. In fact, its slogan for many years was very appropriate: "Precision, Performance, Prestige."

Frigidaire has a matchless brand equity in the world, with a long list of first places in rankings and an enviable base of customers. As it happens with very few and selected brands, the granting of product licenses under the Frigidaire brand is subject to an intense inspection.

We are proud that Frigidaire has chosen an iron designed by ADN DESIGN to complete its offer of mini-appliances. The FCL-212 iron presents a careful and formal configuration, which stresses its fluidity and dynamism. The configuration of the steam regulation command, inside the handle, and an anti-lime washable filter articulate the whole formal development. The black color with touch finish, combined with neutral white and metalized details, emphasize the sophistication and prestige of this innovative iron.

Pecha Kucha Night Bilbao vol.1

Last April 15th, there was a motivating international event in Bilbao, which has already reached cities on the five continents: Pecha Kucha Night. Organized by Creativity Zentrum, the goal of this meeting is to support young designers and architects, giving them the chance to meet, get to know people, and show their work.

Created in Tokyo in February, 2003, by the studio Klein Dytham Architecture, Pecha Kucha Night has become, with the passing of time, an extraordinarily popular event held in more than 200 cities, and it inspires creative people worldwide. The Pecha Kucha format is based on a very simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. Each participant suggests 20 images, which are displayed during 20 seconds each, and a presentation is done on them. This format promotes attractive, concise, and fast presentations.

In this sparkling framework, Carlos Alonso Pascual presented the master lines of the initiative Bilbao 2014 World Design Capital, and encouraged the attendants to get involved in the project and contribute to the design of our future. “A future open for those who want to offer their work for the creation of a better society, more sustainable and fair,” Carlos Alonso said.

Creativity Zenturm has already announced the date for the second edition of this casual and stimulating event: June 17th. Without a doubt, an unavoidable appointment for all the people interested in Creativity, Innovation, and Design.

Playa de Ondarzabal

Playa de Ondarzabal is a wooden hull fishing boat built in 1966 in the Murelaga dockyards in Lekeitio. Since 2001 it stopped being used for inshore fishing, and it was turned into a museum dedicated to the life of the high-seas fishermen.

ADN DESIGN and Espiral Ondarea have now performed a thorough internal remodeling in order to bring the fishing systems and the life on an inshore fishing ship closer to the visitors. Likewise, the teaching contents and the quality of the pedagogical information have been reinforced, including topics regarding the protection of the maritime and environmental legacy.

“The expository speech on the ship -said Carlos San José, Project Manager at ADN DESIGN- is focused on the fishermen, but also, on the ones that stay on land, although it has a merely introductory role: Women, children, and all the unions related to the fishing industry. By introducing these characters, we talk at the same time about Lekeitio: its crowded streets, its stores, the market, the church, the ice factory, etc. Therefore, once the visit to the ship is finished, it is an invitation to visit those places that are relevant in the fishermen’s life. A strategy to relate all the legacy and touristic resources available in the villa.”

“Nevertheless,–continues Carlos San José- the main topic is the fishermen that worked on the Playa de Ondarzabal, their experiences and their testimony.” The expository speech is based on three theme blocks: The fishing systems, navigation, and finally, the daily life on the ship. The positive experience acquired and assessed in other visits has served as a starting point to suggest a participative visit where the visitors have experiences related to the resource being explained. In other cases, they are invited to verify something complex with their own hands, for example: how much strength is necessary to get a tuna from the sea?

The internal organization works have included the adaptation of spaces under deck that until now the visitors could not have access to, such as the greenhouse and the machine room. «For this, the entrance through the forecastle has been allowed," said Carlos San José. He explained that: “The wooden partition separating this compartment from the cellar has also been eliminated, and the separating wall of the greenhouses has been removed to get to the machine room.”

The plan has also included the remodeling of one of the greenhouses to show its actual operation, and the reproduction of the sounds heard aboard an inshore-fishing ship when it is fishing. “An inshore-fishing ship is not a conventional expository space, and therefore, it has required innovating expository resources according to the space and the suggested type of guided visit.” The renewed offer of the Playa de Ondarzabal includes the collection of ethnographic objects, such as educational resources, bait boxes, traps and fishing arts, explanatory panels, and a plasma screen in order to inform the visitors about the fishing activities performed by the ship while it was active, as well as its legacy value.

Bilbao World Design Capital on Bizkaia Creaktiva

Design: Hacking + Repairing

Within the second edition of the International Forum of Creative Industries Bizkaia Creaktiva, Brigitte Sauvage participated in the round-table conference last March 25th in the Bilbao Maritime Museum. Chaired by Pilar Kaltzada, General Manager of Promotion and Communication at Innobasque, the round-table conference explored the current situation and the expectations of the creative sectors of Bizkaia.

Later, Brigitte chaired the class “Design: Hacking + Repairing”, with the participation of two interesting speakers of great international prestige: Joanna van der Zanden and Otto von Busch.

Joanna van der Zander currently works as an independent consultant and creative director in several multidisciplinary projects. As artistic director of Platform21 in Amsterdam, Joanna is in charge of selecting its shared design projects with undefined duration. It is here where she started her best known projects, such as Hacking Ikea and Repairing. By the end of the 90’s, she was a member of the pioneering team who created the internationally known communication agency, KesselsKramer.

Otto von Bush is heterodox within high fashion, but he is also a researcher in the Design and Business Department at the University of Gothenburg. He has worked in art, design, and crafts. He teaches in different areas of design in several Scandinavian universities. He finished his doctorate on Fashion Design and Activism in 2008. In his research work he explores the active participation within the fashion world without losing its uniqueness, while imitating the current trends in a free system.

As Brigitte said, «both have provided the attendants with a new vision of the social role of design through the exploration of the processes for creating meaning. Hacking is an interactive practice to add transparency in opaque objects or structures through appropriation, transformation, and dialogue.»

New Work Environments

This is the second year in a row that the International Forum of Creative Industries Bizkaia Creaktiva is held in Bilbao at the Maritime Museum on March 23rd, 24th, and 25th. Organized by Creativity Zentrum, the meeting has been a special occasion for the people interested in creative economy to exchange ideas and experiences. In addition to having original and renowned international speakers, the attendants were able to attend interesting workshops and seminars.

In the atrium of the Maritime Museum, the visitors were also able to enjoy a thought-provoking exhibition about new work environments, organized by ADN DESIGN with the cooperation of Muebles Icaza and BAIA Innovation Agency. As Carlos San José, exhibition organizer, said:

We are witnessing a redefinition of the work environments. The highest current level of computerization and work in a network are added to the evolution of the new technologies in communication and information.
The traditional design criteria are being reinterpreted due to the changes that are occurring. Solutions integrating architecture, office furniture and equipment with more environmental awareness and concern are pursued.
The companies suggest products that are flexible in use, the articulation capacity of the spaces, and the incorporation of technological novelties.

The different design solutions displayed in the exhibition try to optimize the ways of working, promoting the users’ quality of life. The products we can see in the exhibition propose work environments that are more pleasant, diversified, and that facilitate social relations.

Coolhunting at Alhóndiga Bilbao

Next May 21st, Alhóndiga Bilbao will hold the first edition of “Coolhunting, knowing the user of the future,” organized by Bilbaodesignacademy. The meeting will bring together two of the most important European experts in trends: Víctor Gil and Carl Rohde, who will teach a customized workshop.

They will explain the following in the workshop: How are the consumption trends developed and spread? What are the advantages obtained by those companies that detect in advance what their customers will request in the future? Is it possible to forecast the trends? What should we know to achieve it? The conference is directed towards professionals that need to update their knowledge or to include new work tools in their companies. It is aimed at designers, experts and directors in marketing and management, communication specialists, publicists, and all those people wanting to work in fields related to the consumption trends, design, and their direct relation with social events.

Ambiente 2010

As in previous editions, ADN DESIGN has been present in Ambiente 2010, one of the largest international fairs of consumer goods.

During the hard winter in Germany, a wide range of products for the table, the kitchen, and the home created a pleasant springtime atmosphere in the exhibition rooms.

Indeed, this year we have found a completely restructured fair. The disappearance of permanent locations of important companies, such as WMF, Rosenthal, or Alessi, has brought a rush of fresh air to the contest. These exhibitors took the chance to redesign their presentation and to introduce new and exciting concepts. Specially, the sectors of kitchen and kitchen ware were able to enjoy more space and a new and more appropriate exhibiting structure.

Throughout the previous editions of Ambiente, design has been increasing its presence and relevance, now becoming a central vector of the contest. In addition to the traditional meetings with the selection “Design Plus” or with the promotional area “Talents”, this year has included other thought-provoking initiatives, such as the “Kitchen Innovation of the Year” award or the space “At Hand”, presenting ideas from students from two important design schools.

As a result of this participation, the accessories series ARIMA ZEN and ELITE TRIA were born, leaving a place for the user to define its environment in accordance to its likings and habits. Smart systems allow its users to decide their level of participation in their bathroom’s configuration and further present new configurations of pieces adapted to the bathroom’s use and physical reality.

Brigitte Sauvage has intervened on the 21st edition of the Marketing Master given by the Basque Country University / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea with a proposal entitled 'Design and Value of Use as Innovation engines'. This intervention is framed within ADN DESIGN´s activities for promoting the relations and exchange of experiences among the professionals working in design-related disciplines and the knowledge diffusion within the Strategic Design field, aimed at achieving more innovative and competitive organisations.

The Design oriented to the user is one of the fundamental tools for creating value in a company and, therefore, properly managed, for generating benefits. It promotes a strategic employment of creativity by means of a strategic-creative analysis process that optimises the companies´ and organisations´ creative capacity, and encourages the creation of product and service concepts with a high use-value for consumers. In this context, the Design’s strategic integration in companies is a key competitive factor that allows promoting new ways of innovation based on the people.

Design in Industry: Tools for being competitive

On the past 3rd December, the first ´Design in Industry: Tools for being competitive´ conference was held organised by the Association of Basque Designers EIDE company Análisis y Simulación with the collaboration of Siemens PLM Software and the the Technological Park of Álava. This conference aims at promoting Industrial Design integration in companies as a means to find new market orientations through Innovation and show the potential of CAD 3D´s new tools in relation to this activity. In response to EIDE´s invitation and is framed within the actions undertaken by ADN DESIGN to promote a better understating of the Design’s role in entrepreneurial strategies, Brigitte Sauvage held a lecture entitled 'Strategic Design and Innovation'.

Since 1996, ADN DESIGN has decidedly bet on integrating a CAD 3D solution as a natural tool for optimising the Design process both in its initial conception phases as well as in the development stage. In 2007, the image of the model ALLERGY STOP, part of the range of vacuum cleaners BEAGLE designed by SOLAC, was chosen to illustrate June in the UGS CALENDAR. It was awarded one of the best three images of the EMEA zone.

Longevity and sustainability

An important number of products designed by ADN DESIGN have proven to be exceptionally long-lasting and therefore, highly sustainable. As pointed out by Gijs Bakker, Dutch design guru, "creating objects filled with meaning that make you fall in love with them forever, is a way of sustainability ". One of the most emblematic examples of this reality is the cleaning line designed in 1993 for ARAVEN. The Zaragoza company of home equipment has recently deepened in this strategy basing its new series Green Line on the mythical cleaning product line.

The Green Line cleaning products are elaborated with recycled plastic carefully selected to ensure quality. It saves the planet CO2, water and energy, which contributes in reducing environmental contamination.

After 16 years in the market, this new launching shows the longevity of a well-conceived design and its capacity to continue being useful for its users and the environment throughout the years.

ARAVEN´s ecological product line is completed with the Biodegradable series, that uses a material that helps accelerate the decomposition process of plastic once it has been thrown away. This reduces 50% of the product’s decomposition time in nature. This series incorporates the Rolling Box 60 (1994), the underbed Yumbo (1998), the drawers Organised Life (2004and the Rolling Cube (2008), all of them designed by ADN DESIGN.

Solac Tech Evolution

I believe that with the crisis and the problem of moving the productive structures to countries with a cheaper labour force, Europe is trying to reposition or reinvent itself. In order to achieve this, innovation is being promotes but, in many occasions, it is being carried out in a relatively irresponsible manner. Innovation is a strategy, and like such, we must determine if it is the most suitable for resolving the problem our company has to face. Innovation, as any other radical change, entails certain risks. Therefore, we must determine if we have possibilities of assuming these risks and developing a successful innovative product. Innovation understood as a disruptive and radical change is not always the most suitable strategy for the company. There is not a single correct strategy for any problem in any context. Evolution, or evolutive innovation, since companies evolve and this is intrinsic to the nature of things.

Stendhal in Burgos

The Burgos City Council has been the first to officially approve the Stendhal Bench. The bench, a street furniture element designed by ADN DESIGN for the Samen Group, is to be installed at new public works under construction around the city.

The photo shows the recently inaugurated Stendhal Bench in Burgos’ Juan XXIII Park. The piece will be prominently installed in many other locations, and will soon become yet another representative item in the Burgos urban landscape.

This past July, an exhibition was held in the Bilblioteca Foral de Bizkaia (Regional Library of Biscay) of a project by Carlos Alonso Pascual aimed at presenting Bilbao as a candidate city for the World Design Capital initiative. Creativity Zentrum and ADN DESIGN have expressed their willingness to help out in making this exciting project come to fruition. Such a task will require a wide-ranging, multidisciplinary and fully cooperative workgroup.

Once again, the Centro Aragonés de Diseño Industrial Cadi (Aragon Cadi Centre for Industrial Design) is promoting the Diseña project. The project – which this year is called Diseña más (More Design) – is aimed at offering a tool to SMEs to help in creating their products and their corporate image.

The Diseña más project is directed at any SME that regards industrial design and the management of their identity as strategic factors. It seeks to convince such companies to incorporate industrial design into more projects and over longer periods of time, that this is an effective route, and that design and innovation represent a kind of R&D that can directly affect their competitiveness and future viability – whatever their activity or size.

This coming 18 September, Brigitte Sauvage will appear at an intensive Diseña más workshop. She will give a talk aimed at accredited designers underlining the key role of use factors as an analytical tool previous to the generation of design concepts.

Bilbao 2014 World Design Capital

Last 2 July, professionals from different Creative Industries sectors came together at the Biblioteca Foral de Bizkaia for the presentation of the final conclusions of the Creative Meetings that Creativity Zentrum had been organizing over previous weeks.

The meetings brought together more than 70 Creativity professionals, who shared their ideas and feelings on the sector’s current situation and future prospects. Participants dealt with such topics as the economic and financial situation, the training of professionals, and regional location. As a coda to each meeting, participants were asked to formulate proposals for the development of the Creative Industries in Biscay.

Working within this framework, Carlos presented a project aimed at presenting Bilbao as a candidate city for the World Design Capital initiative for 2014. The proposal, which was quickly supported by the meeting organisers as well as participants, was also presented to the press and public in attendance after finishing the exhibition, with conclusions from the Aproximación al Sector Creativo de Bizkaia (Getting to Know the Biscay Creative Sector) report.

World Design Capital is a biannual designation that was created to identify and recognise those cities that make effective use of design in revitalising the city and improving the lives of their citizens. The city of Torino had the bragging rights in 2008, while Seoul will receive the honour for 2010.

At this time, 47 cities from 27 countries are involved in the process of designating the World Design Capital for 2012. This process offers a fantastic opportunity for boosting a city’s cultural, economic and social development through promoting the effective use of design.

The World Design Capital initiative is being promoted by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design Icsid, a non-governmental organisation for professional industrial design, of which BAI - Biscay Innovation Agency is a member.

World Industrial Design Day 2009

Is the theory of biological evolution an appropriate model for apply to the evolution of companies and organisations?

This year marks the celebration of the second centenary of the birth of the English naturalist Charles Darwin, as well as the one hundred fiftieth anniversary of his most famous work – The Origin of the Species. Many events, publications, exhibits and conferences are taking place around the world, shining a new light on this knowledge of the development and diversification of life on Earth and of the role played by humanity in nature.

A number of business analysts and consultants have used the occasion to highlight the interesting parallels and divergences between biological evolution and the evolution of companies and organisations. They tend to put special emphasis on the mechanisms and effects of innovation in the world of nature as well as business.

In his famous work The Selfish Gene (1976), the ethologist and evolutionary theorist Richard Dawkins coined the term "meme" (analogous to gene) in order to describe how the principles of genetic evolution could also explain the spreading of ideas and cultural phenomena.

The most famous application of this to the business world comes from the consultant Geoffrey Moore, of TCG Advisors. In his book Dealing with Darwin: How Great Companies Innovate at Every Phase of Their Evolution (2005) he writes: "Evolution requires us to continually refresh our competitive advantage, sometimes in dribs and drabs, sometimes in major cataclysms, but always with some part of our business portfolio at risk and in play. To innovate forever, in other words, is not an aspiration; it is a design specification. It is not a strategy; it is a requirement."

What lessons can be learned from the theory of biological evolution and applied to our companies and organisations? Does the evolution of a company follow a specific direction, or is it a blind mechanism for adapting to the environment? What role is played by fate and necessity in the evolution of organisations?

Creative Workshop

Last 22 May, Brigitte Sauvage and Carlos Alonso participated in the Bizkaia Creaktiva workshop, together with representatives from advertising, industrial and graphic design, fashion design and architecture. The objective of the meeting, which was organised by Creativity Zentrum, was to get first-hand knowledge of the current situation in those sectors, and to arrive at the specific ingredients for not only sustaining, but increasing their activities. Later meetings are planned in order to fill out the overview of the creative industries in Biscay, with the results, opinions and proposals set publication in the future.

The Aragon Centre for Industrial Design CADI has published an interview with Brigitte Sauvage in its informational bulletin, focused on the internationalisation of design services:

But...design services are exported?

Yes, of course. If you are offering services that have your own features, a particular work philosophy, a specific way to focus projects and a particular area of knowledge, these services may be the most appropriate for any company, regardless of their geographic location.

How does a small company like ours end up exporting to China. What could make us decide to do that?

We were working in sectors that manufactured products in large series, such as small home appliances. So, it was common from the mid-90s onward for products that we designed to be manufactured in emerging economies, primarily China. This awakened us to the importance that these countries were going to have, as well as how important it would be to have direct knowledge of how things work there.

On the other hand, we’ve seen a transformation in European companies that “unload” their productive structure, becoming purchasers of products conceived and manufactured in China. To the extent that these products were destined for European markets, we had the knowledge needed to design them, and as such, we could play an important role for Asian manufacturers.

What have been the main difficulties you have encountered in such a different market?

We have had to learn their way of operating, in terms of company philosophies as well as their particular work organisation. And of course, we had to learn the codes governing personal relations in the company.

What are relations like with a customer thousands of miles away and with such different cultural features?

Distance isn’t so important, considering the communications technologies available these days.

However, the cultural differences between East and West are important. We’ve had to readapt our way of working and communicating, be much more flexible, and set up less pre-established and rigid operational structures than those used here. In short, we’ve had to learn how to ‘flow’ with the context instead of ‘dominating’ it, which is how things work in Asian culture.

Have you also worked for the Chinese market itself? What influence does knowledge of the user have on your projects?

Generally, we have worked with products destined for the US or European market, although some have occasionally been marketed in the Chinese market – with the added feature of European Design. Recently we’ve begun to work on products that are specifically destined for the Asian market – an exciting challenge. Our frequent trips to China over the past decade, and our interest in these markets, have helped us tremendously.

Do you only offer conceptual design services, or do you have to cover more stages of product development?

We mostly provide conceptual design services, although we do assure that the development process is monitored in order to guarantee the quality of the manufactured product.

Are you currently exporting, or do you plan to export to new countries?

We export to other European countries, and of course, we don’t rule out exporting to new, emerging countries. It’s not easy, since there is little support for exporting industry services. But we know that we are highly able to adapt, and have solid knowledge in the area of activity that we can offer.

What volume of your turnover is accounted for by exports?

It has been between 30% and 40% of our turnover over the past decade.

What would you recommend to our professional colleagues in terms of setting out on this international direction – are there any helpful institutions?

Undoubtedly the ICEX (Spanish Foreign Trade Institute). There may also be institutions set up by local governments that have established offices in some of the emerging countries in order to support their companies. It’s not an easy path or any kind of panacea. It is a matter of competing on a global level, which requires lots of curiosity and a heavy dose of tenacity and effort – even personal. However, it adds an exciting dimension to our activity while providing us with the kind of global viewpoint so essential today. It also makes us more competent, even when working in our own, nearby market.

Arkeologi Museoa

After 36 months of work, the Archaeological Museum of Bizkaia opened its doors on the 2 April, with a threefold aim: to store and manage the territory’s historical and pre-historical heritage; to support research and cataloguing; and finally, to disseminate and promote the value of its collection to the general public.

The new museum is located on the old railway station of the line between Bilbao and Lezama. This five-storey building occupies a 3,000 square metre area and is located on the Plaza de Unamuno in the old quarter (Casco Viejo) of Bilbao.

The museography project, which envisaged a 500 piece exhibition, was developed by a multidisciplinary team integrated by Espiral Ondare, El Plan B and ADN DESIGN. Most of the pieces belong to the archaeological collections of the Basque Museum, while other pieces come from the Museo de Arte Sacro as well as other materials from excavations in progress.

The exhibition, which interior design and display supports have been conceived by ADN DESIGN, shows the living history of the territory through a chronological journey from Pre-historic times to the Modern Age. The visitor can go back 75,000 years in time with the oldest pieces, and progress through the changes undergone by the climate, the landscape, and the customs and habits of the successive settlers who inhabited this territory.

These witnesses of history range from the primitive beauty of a scull from the Iron Age found in San Esteban de Mesterika, to the shipwreck of Urbieta, a vessel used to transport iron mineral dated from the 15th century, one of the centrepieces of the new museum which was recovered recently in Urdaibai. Around such a centrepiece, ADN DESIGN has designed an interesting curved ramp to allow us to get to know the construction technique of the oldest vessel found in the Bay of Biscay to date.

The funerary steles and funerary offerings recovered in the cave Cueva de Pico Ramos in Muskiz, as well as daily use and religious objects recovered from the archaeological site of Forua, are displayed in a succession of successful settings. The carefully designed stands made from different materials exhibit coins, household items, iron wedges and nails, and architectural or sculptural components from various periods.

The public display of archaeological remains is complemented by 19 interactive multimedia and five audiovisual videos, which help to improve our understanding of each section of the new museum.

As José Luis Bilbao, Deputy General of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia said, "Seventy-five thousand years are staring at us from those displays".

In front of an audience of almost one hundred people, Brigitte Sauvage took part in the First International Forum for Creative Industries Bizkaia Creaktiva on 26 March. Sauvage discussed the meaning and relevance of innovation within the current environment, along with Roberto Gómez from Disonancias and Carlos Menéndez from the Group VIP’s. We reproduce a brief summary of her speech which received a very warm welcome both from the audience and from organisers of the event:

Bizkaia Creaktiva, the First International Forum for Creative Industries will commence on 25 March in Bilbao. The Technological Institute of Plastics (AIMPLAS) has organised as part of its activities in the product design field, the first Good Practice Guide for designers of products manufactured with plastic materials.

Innovation through product design is a key opportunity within the current economic context.

The implantation of a successful product strategy is critical for the survival of most companies.

With the aim to promote design and innovation of products manufactured from plastic materials, AIMPLAS has developed a Good Practice Guide for designers.

This Guide, developed thanks to the support of the Institute of Medium and Small Size Enterprises of Valencia (IMPIVA) as part of the Impiva Disseny program, aims to be a reference instrument and to promote the use of plastic materials in designs, to allow the designers to learn the criteria to be implemented in the design of products manufactured with these materials.

With her presentation entitled "Design: Innovation and Value of Use", Brigitte Sauvage will take part on the official launching of the guide on Wednesday, 4 March. This event will be a meeting point for designers and processors of plastic materials, and a forum to generate synergies and identify business opportunities through product design.

The Value of Knowledge

The Value of Knowledge was the title of Brigitte Sauvage speech during the diploma award ceremony for around 600 students, who completed the technology courses organised by the Technological Institute of Aragon (ITA) and the Aragon Institute of Employment (INAEM).

The event, held in the auditorium of ITA, was chaired by the Minister for Science, Technology and University, Pilar Ventura, along with the Managing Director of the Institute, Manuel Muniesa and the provincial director of the INAEM, Marisa Sauvirón.

It is impossible to improve the competitive capacity of companies without training their human resources; therefore, the ITA and the INAEM carry out on-going research on the training requirements required in the R&D+I field, so that the programs are defined by their quality and practical and immediate implementation of the skills acquired. The Basques and the Pacific

Until 28 February, 2009, The Maritime Museum of San Sebastian is home to the exhibition The Basques and the Pacific, a homage to the sailor Andrés de Urdaneta from Guipuzcoa.

The exhibition, designed by AIRU Z.K. and ADN DESIGN, provides an overview of the history of the presence of the Basques in the Pacific, including islands such as the Philippines and geographical areas like the West Coast of America or the coastal regions of the South of China. The exhibition reveals the important role that the Basques played in exploring and discovering new shipping and trading routes, as well as their active economic, scientific, cultural, administrative, military and religious functions within the framework of Spanish colonisation.

The chronological development ranges from the period of the great discoveries, with sections devoted to Juan Sebastián Elcano, Andrés de Urdaneta and Miguel López de Legazpi, right up to the present day, with reference to commercial exchanges with Asia or to the setting up of Basque companies in China. In this latest section it is worth mentioning the presence of SteamXpress, an iron designed by ADN DESIGN and manufactured in China for Black & Decker Appliances USA.

Imagine, Create, Innovate

The European Commission have launched the communication campaign for the European Year of Creativity and Innovation 2009 with the slogan “Imagine. Create. Innovate”. The aim of the Year is to promote creative and innovative approaches in different sectors of human activity and contribute to better equip the European Union for the challenges ahead in a globalised world.

On the eve of the campaign launch, the Commissioner Ján Figel’ said:

Both creativity and the capacity to innovate are key human qualities – they are inherent to all of us, and we make use of them in many situations and places, whether knowingly or not. With this European Year, I would like to see that the citizens of Europe understand better that by promoting human talents and the human capacity to innovate, we can actively shape Europe for the better, to help it fully develop its potential, both economically and socially.

Through this initiative, the Commission is organising promotional campaigns, conferences and seminars at European, national, regional and local levels throughout 2009 to address business, regional and research policies, as well as education and culture issues.

Last 15th of December the first Foro Innogune Plasticos 2008 took place at its headquarters in Bilbao, organised by the Business Confederation of Bizkaia (CEBEK).

The initiative, sponsored by the Department of Innovation of the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia (Regional Council of Bizkaia) and the Innovation Agency BAI, aims to address innovation in plastic parts and products producing companies, as a collective effort where the users, producers and suppliers of the sector must get involved in order to favour the processes of technological transference and upgrading.

ADN DESIGN took part on the first day, which covered the reinforcement of the designing capacity and was targeted to present an updated overview of the issue involved in the incorporation of the Design function in companies. Brigitte Sauvage had the opportunity to share ADN DESIGN experience in this key sector, along with other distinguished organisations such as Leartiker Research and Technology, Aimplas Instituto Tecnológico del Plástico, AYS Análisis y Simulaciones de Plásticos or Gaiker - IK4.

Tacto Plus Thermostat

More than a decade ago, Airzone detected that comfort air-conditioning by conducts had great limitations: the lack of temperature control in each area provoked comfort reduction and an unnecessary increase in power expense. As a result, they developed a new concept in comfort home air-conditioning: zoning. This system guarantees the ideal temperature in every room of the home.

Airzone has relied on ADN DESIGN for the design and mechanical development of the most interactive component with users of the zoning system, the built-in Tacto Plus Thermostat. This element controls the on and off functions of the comfort air-conditioning in the room where it is installed, and allows the selection of the set point temperature.

The Master in Marketing of the Basque Country University / Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea is taught at the Faculty of Economics and Business Studies of Bilbao since the academic year 1989-1990.

Organized by the Institute of Economics Applied to Business of the University of the Basque Country UPV / EHU, and sponsored by the Department of Employment and Training of the Diputación Foral de Bizkaia (Regional Council), the Emilio Soldevilla Foundation (FESIDE) and the Basque Association of Economists, is rated among the best five masters in Spain in its speciality.

The course methodology seeks to develop the students’ capacity to acquire a global understanding of the peculiarities of the various areas of decision-making involved in the business activity, processes and marketing. It also takes into account that the above mentioned activities are developed in an increasingly dynamic, complex and international environment, where Information Technologies and Communication play a vital role.

During Science, Technology and Innovation Week in the Basque Country, we had the privilege on November 10 of listening to a lecture by Nicholas Negroponte, Chairman Emeritus of MIT Media Lab and chairman of the One Laptop per Child initiative.

During his lecture, Mr. Negroponte stressed diversity and heterogeneity as the fundamental starting points for any process of innovation, and highlighted the importance of design in the creation of his most emblematic project: producing low-cost laptop computers to help bridge the digital divide in poorer countries.

He maintains that there are two ways of creating low-cost products, the more usual of which is to take cheap labour, cheap components and cheap design and create a cheap computer. The second way involves using highly advanced manufacturing processes, the highest technology available and a great design capable of facilitating large-scale production. One Laptop per Child is based on the second strategy. As Negroponte himself stresses, Design matters!

The interpretation centre of the Igartubeiti Farmhouse Museum in Ezkio-Itsaso (Gipuzkoa) takes visitors on a journey through the history and development of Basque farmhouses and the way of life of their inhabitants.

The Igartubeiti farmhouse is a magnificent example of Basque rural architecture from its golden age in the 16th and 17th centuries. It offers visitors an opportunity to see the atmosphere, furnishings and implements that would have been found in a traditional farmhouse. The interpretation centre uses latest-generation expographics to depict the history, characteristics, working and development of Basque farmhouses.

ADN DESIGN designed, produced and installed the new ambience for the ethnographic display cabinets. The themes on show include property inheritance, domestic beliefs, household linen and farm implements.

Canton Fair 2008

The first thing that strikes Western visitors on entering the pavilions of the 104th China Import and Export Fair is its astonishing size. The Canton Fair has taken place in the city of Guangzhou twice a year since 1957, and it is indeed huge: 851,000 m2 of exhibition space with more than 42,000 stands and an amazing variety of sections: domestic appliances, electrical and electronic goods, lighting, communications, consumer electronics, large-scale machinery and equipment, small-scale machinery, tools, hardware products, construction and decoration materials, sanitary and bathroom ware, motor cycles, bicycles, chemicals, etc.

The last edition of the fair generated more than 38 billion dollars’ worth of business.

We were given sophisticated electronic photo ID cards with the word BUYER (in English and Chinese) printed on them in large letters, and spent much of our time explaining that we were not actually buyers but rather observers of trends, and that our influence on purchasing decisions was based on providing advice on points of design and innovation.

The downturn in the world financial system overshadowed the event, which has become a yardstick for gauging the state of China’s economy and exports. Many exhibitors wondered whether the number of commercial agreements reached at the fair would continue to grow, given the gloomy economic picture. Concern was particularly evident in those sectors hardest hit by the real estate crisis, with companies battling to obtain new business contacts in whatever manner they could, but in other sectors there was an atmosphere of calm expectation.

We had the chance to talk to management staff from various companies about the extent and consequences of the economic downturn. We got the impression that the most active firms are looking into ways of taking advantage of the current uncertainties to embark on large-scale projects with highly ambitious objectives. In spite of the local repercussions of the worldwide financial crisis, the huge Chinese market clearly still represents a fabulous opportunity for all firms that focus on design and innovation. Products created by ADN DESIGN were on view at several firms.

Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2008

As soon as we got over our jetlag, we set off again to attend the biggest electronics fair in Asia and the second biggest in the world. The autumn 2008 edition of the Hong Kong Electronics Fair, which has an excellent track record stretching back 28 years, took place at the striking Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The fair is organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council. From October 13-16 it brought together over 2500 exhibitors from 29 countries.

The Electronic Asia platform, which presented components, services and technology, was staged at the same time as the Electronics Fair, thus heightening synergy in the sector.

Hong Kong is a truly fascinating city, and ever since we first visited it to attend the Business of Design Week 2004 Lifestyle Asia almost 4 years ago, it has held a special attraction for us. Like a great many other visitors from all over the world, the main focus for us on this occasion was the great potential of the regions electronics industry. In the first four months of 2008, Hong Kong exported electronic products to the tune of $58.4 billion, 14% up on the same period last year. The dynamic energy of the Hong Kong Electronics Fair 2008 is a true reflection of the powerful contribution made by the electronics industry to the economy of the region.

The Hall of Fame at the Congress Centre presented the latest advances in design and technology from front-line brands on a spectacular stage. Other points of interest were to be found in the Digital World, Home Tech and Technology Exchange Zone sections. The Home Tech section, centred on home appliances, security and home automation products and electronic products for personal care, included presentations of some of the latest products created by ADN DESIGN.

Concurrently, the new Asia World-Expo building adjacent to Hong Kong airport was hosting Electronics & Components . Organised by Global Sources, an active platform for information on products and components suppliers, this event has grown to a size which far exceeded our initial expectations.

It was certainly an excellent opportunity to take an in-depth look at this fascinating, dynamic sector of industry.

DesignBasque

“To be ignorant of what happened before you were born”, wrote Cicero in Orator, “is to remain forever a child. For what is the value of human life if it is not woven into the lives of our ancestors by the records of history?”

ADN DESIGN set up the DesignBasque scheme to show the international community objects designed in the Basque Country throughout history.

DesignBasque offers designers, design historians and enthusiasts for the culture of the project in general a selection of products from our past. The initial selection is small, but we expect it to grow as colleagues and friends offer their collaboration -all contributions are most welcome- in gradually transforming it into a true repository of our memories. Memory of the past is not a burden: it encourages us to undertake new projects and points the way that we should go.

This scheme is not intended as eye candy or to pander to a desire for nostalgia. DesignBasque seeks to become a meeting point and the means for producing communication and knowledge. In short, it seeks to recover in the meaning once held by objects from our past, so that we can obtain a better understanding of them and of ourselves.

New PLUNIA Guttering

Use Analysis in Aragón

Brigitte Sauvage will run the "In-depth Use Analysis of a Product" course at the Aragón Technological Institute (ITA). The course is part of the 2008 Aragon Vocational Training and Insertion Plan.

During the initial stage of defining a product, enough time and resources are all too frequently not dedicated to carrying out an exhaustive study of the life cycle of the product from the point of view of its use. Practice and experience in industrial design tells us that an analysis of this type enhances the possibilities of improving the product. It also allows the areas of opportunity to be identified for generating new product concepts and fostering innovation.

Overlooking this analysis in the initial phases of the project may lead to products being defined that, once on the market, do not satisfy the expectations of their users or even cause them to be rejected. A correct understanding of the real criteria and needs of the potential users of the products has a decisive impact on the likelihood of it being a commercial success..

Bookmakers have now hit the Basque Country. The first outlet run by Ekasa, whose trademark is Reta (acronym of Red Telemática de Apuestas or Betting Telematic Network in English), was opened in Calle Somera, right in the heart of the old part of Bilbao, on 30 August.

The new Reta computer terminal, the outcome of an ongoing partnership between Ekasa and ADN DESIGN will be installed in the Basque company’s bookmaker’s shops. The company plans to have 25 outlets by 2010.

On the last june 30, ADN DESIGN has signed up an agreement to upgrade their NX licenses of Siemens PLM Software.

On 20 April, we attend Chinaplas 2008, the 22nd edition of the Plastics and Rubber Industries International Exhibition at Shanghai’s New International Expo Center. 120,000 m2 of exhibition area, 1.700 exhibitors from 36 countries and 63.000 visitors expected are the main facts for this show.

As this trade fair coincided with our stay in China, we did not miss the opportunity to get to know the current plastic industry trends, networking and products presentation on one of the world leading market.

Creativitat Industrial

Creativitat Industrial is the title of an exhibition organised by Girona University and the CID Centre, dedicated to the School of Engineering’s 15 years in Product Development and Industrial Design Engineering. From 14 to 18 April in Girona and from 12 to 30 May in Figueras, the work from more than a dozen design consultancies set up by post-graduates from that school will be on display.

Brigitte Sauvage, ADN DESIGN partner, has been collaborating with the School of Engineering as Guest Lecturer since 1994, to train its students in User Centered Design.

Design + the linking force

Under the title Design + the linking force, the Design Management Institute held its Annual European Conference in Paris from 16 to 18 April 2008.

Design is an integrating activity and process, a way of thinking, an increasingly significant contributor to organizational success. The role of design is evolving beyond just the physical process of creating beautiful objects, desirable packaging or unique branding. Design can be a linking force, a unifying element across the enterprise, a connection between business, culture, and environment.

At ADN DESIGN, we understand design as a strategic tool and it is therefore highly gratifying to attend this type of forums.

The three days conference connected us with the best in design and management thinking: presentations from leading design, branding and business experts, focused discussion groups and networking opportunities, within a mix of cultures and approaches, for a highly inspiring intellectual -and emotionnal- experience.

Stendhal Bench

The 18th edition of the International Water Exhibition and 8th edition of the Environment Exhibition, SMAGUA, was held in Zaragoza from 12 to 14 March.

This fair, an established event in the water technology sector, was even more important this year as it coincided with the EXPOZARAGOZA 2008 International Exhibition, which will be dedicated to Water and Sustainable Development from June to September.

Grupo Comercial Samen, which was again present at the fair, took advantage of the opportunity to present the Stendhal bench range, designed by ADN DESIGN to overhaul its urban furniture range.

Domotechnica 2008

If we were in Frankfurt two weeks ago, this week we were at DOMOTECNICA, the household appliance fair, which Koelnmesse organises in Cologne on alternate years. Yet again, we could see that there are fewer and fewer European manufacturers at this fair as they prefer AMIENTE, where greater space is being dedicated to household appliances every year.

The changes made to this year’s fair (dividing its structure into Domo-Selection, Global Sources and Domo Components, and its transformation into a debate forum on current issues), were not sufficient to recover its former splendour. The fair is currently held in only two of its eleven pavilions.

Ambiente 2008

For more than a decade, we have been at the AMBIENTE international fair, which each year brings together in Frankfurt the main European and Asian household appliance manufacturers: from kitchen utensils or small electrical appliances to furniture, textiles and decoration items. And this year was no exception.

Along with the usual pavilions distributed by sectors, Messe Frankfurt, the event’s organisers, have yet again introduced new areas dedicated to trends, design awards, young designers, copies, Asia, Koziol or Guzzini monographics… which herald a brilliant future for the sector's most important fair.

As was to be expected, many of the products designed by our studio for leading brands, such as BOSCH, SAN IGNACIO, SIEMENS, SOLAC, UFESA... and for third parties and marketed by SEVERIN, SCARLETT or KENWOOD, were on display at the fair.

Proyecto Diseña

Brigitte Sauvage, an ADN DESIGN partner, has worked on PROYECTO DISEÑA. VOLUMEN 1, the book published by CADI (Aragon Industrial Design Centre). She wrote an article entitled Use Value, Evolution Motor for the book.

The capacity for innovation, or for evolution, and the ability to identify potential opportunities are key factors for a company in today’s economic situation. The implementation of a successful product strategy implies understanding that the problem raised, at the start of the design process, is the harmonisation/optimisation of the relations between people, items and their context of use. The object is only the end of an analysis process. It consists of the translation of a theoretical profile to a tangible object that can be manufactured and marketed - or a service that can be implemented - in the framework of the objectives and resources of the project put forward by the company.
